Below is some information regarding domain name transfers. Generally,
domain name transfers involve interaction with a third party that
hosts or has originally registered a domain name. Emerald has no
control over these third-party companies. It is recommended that
you notify the company currently hosting any domain name you wish
to transfer to let it know of your plans.

What
is the domain name transfer process?
Ideally, the process goes like this:
The domain name
transfer request form is filled out on the Network
Solutions Web site.
Within 24 hours,
a confirmation e-mail will arrive from Network Solutions to us at
Emerald. We review the information and make any changes needed.
We then reply to the message. Within 24 hours, Network Solutions
will send an e-mail requesting authorization for the transfer from
the administrative and technical contacts listed
for the domain name.
One of these
contacts (admin or tech) must reply to the e-mail approving the
transfer.
When Network
Solutions receives this e-mail authorization, then NSI will update
its records so that the next round of updates includes this change.
Those NSI updates take place twice a day, once at 5 am ET and once
at 5 pm ET.

What can cause problems with domain
name transfers?
Domain
name was not originally registered with Network Solutions
Emerald has established a business relationship with Network
Solutions, but anyone can register a domain name with any domain
name registry. Unfortunately, the transfer process is not simple
if a domain name has been registered with those other companies.
In these cases, the transfer process begins by logging into the
registry's Web site and entering a username, account number, and/or
password that was given to the original registrant when the domain
name was first registered. No transfer or modification can take
place without that information.
Client
using domain name for e-mail
Emerald does not host e-mail accounts. If a client has a domain
name and uses it for email (the only e-mail address given lists
the domain name that is going to be transferred), then no transfer
takes place until a solution is created that allows the client to
keep his e-mail addresses. Generally, that solution becomes one
of three options.
- Set up e-mail
aliases to forward e-mails to another valid e-mail account
somewhere on the Internet.
- Set up an
IP redirect. That is something like call-forwarding for
Web sites. Emerald can provide the necessary information to your
current Web hosting company.
- Ask the current
Web host to maintain the e-mail on the mail server where it is
at. Transfer the domain name to us, and then set up an MX record
to send the e-mail back to the mail server where it is processed.
Emerald will need some information from your current Web hosting
company in order to provide this service.
Admin/technical
contacts not responding to request from Network Solutions:
The contacts
may not respond to the e-mails sent by Network Solutions. Emerald
has no control over the speed or accessibility of these administrative
or technical contacts. It is recommended that you notify the company
currently hosting any domain name you wish to transfer to let it
know of your plans.

Is
there any way to force a transfer?
If
you are listed
as the registrant for the domain name you wish to transfer, a transfer-by-fax
letter can be created that should, under most circumstances, transfer
a domain name according to your wishes. That letter is generated
at Emerald Publications and then sent to the client or whomever
originally registered the domain name. That person signs it, puts
it on company letterhead, and faxes it to Network Solutions. When
Network Solutions verifies everything on the letter, it updates
its global nameserver records.
