For almost 135 years, Metropolitan
Life Insurance Company has been insuring the lives of the
people who depend on us. Our success is based on our
long history of social responsibility, strong leadership,
sound investments, and innovative products and services.
The origins
of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife) go back
to 1863, when a group of New York City businessmen raised
$100,000 to found the National Union Life and Limb
Insurance Company.
In 1909,
MetLife Vice President Haley Fiske announced that
"insurance, not merely as a business proposition, but
as a social program" would be the future policy of
the company.
Over the
years, MetLife has made a difference by supporting urban
renewal projects and community financing. The company's
social commitment and its commitment to the security of
its policyholders have proven to be good business.
In 2001
MetLife was the first insurance company to establish a
financial holding company with a nationally chartered
bank.
